Saudi urged to end rights violations against Shiites

By: Mohamed Ali

BERLIN, Germany: Saudi human rights organizations have called on the international community to intervene to end the violations committed by the government against people in the oil-rich Mominin-dominated eastern region of the country.

In a letter, which has also been sent to the UN chief Ban Ki Moon, the three groups urged international organizations to help residents in eastern Saudi Arabia. They also asked the government to stop what they call abuses and all forms of discrimination against its people.

This comes days after the recent killing of a group of people in restive Eastern Province.

On December 20, at least five people were killed by Saudi forces in the town of Awamia. Several people were also arrested.

The Saudi government has come under fire from international human rights organizations for failing to address the rights situation in the monarchy. They say Riyadh has persistently implemented repressive policies that choke freedom of expression, association, and assembly.
