By: Abdol Ali

SAIHAAT, Saudi Arabia: At least five Shiite mourners were martyred and four people also sustained injuries in the armed attack on the Hussainiyah in the city of Saihat near the Qatif region of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on Friday night.

The terror act come two days after the start of Muharram commemorations.

Witnesses said the attacker was trying to approach the Shia mourners gathering, but he was stopped by security guards at a checkpoint. A gun fight then broke out between the two sides.

According to reports, the attacker was killed by Saudi forces, while those injured were transferred to hospital.

The gunman was shot dead by police, according to Al Arabiya TV, in a gun battle in Saihat that left nine other people injured.

Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry said in a statement that the five dead included a woman but declined to comment on the likely motives or the identity of the gunman.

The gunman was wearing an explosives' belt and opened fire as the congregation in the hall was taking part in Hussaini mourning.

Later, a group calling itself Islamic State-Bahrain State said that one of its "soldiers" had attacked with an automatic weapon.

Meanwhile, reports say another armed assault targeted a Shia mosque in the al-Anoud district of Dammam, the capital of Eastern Province on Friday. A foreign worker at the site was wounded in the incident.

Saudi security sources say both assailants in the Friday attacks were Saudi nationals.

Fortunately the second attack had just one wounded.
