By: Nizam Hussain

Lucknow: Thousands of Shia Muslims staged demonstration at Shaheed Smarak on Wednesday demanding reconstruction of Al-Baqi cemetery popularly known as Jannat-ul-Baqi in Saudi Arabia, which was demolished in 1926 by the then king of Saudi Arabia Ibn Saud. Led by Maulana Yasoob Abbas, the protestors appealed to Prime Minister (PM) Modi for exercising his clout over Saudi government for re-construction of the graves. Maulana also sent out a memorandum to the Prime Minister's Office , requesting that the Saudi government be pressured into either reconstructing the tomb at Jannat-ul-Baqi or allowing the Shia community to do so on its own. "Tall buildings have been constructed around the area but graves of the Prophet's kin are left out in the open under Wahabi mentality," he said.

A Protest Against Destruction of Jannat-ul-Baqi was also held in Ghosi, U.P, India.
