Abdul Aziz meets Iran officials on Iraq developments

TEHRAN, Iran: Sayyid Abdul Aziz Al-Hakim, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) who is a member of the US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council and brother of late Ayatullah Sayyid Muhammad Baqer Al-Hakim held talks with Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday.

During his meeting with Iran’s President Muhammad Khatami, which focused on Tehran-Baghdad relations, Abdul Aziz briefed Khatami about the developments in Iraq. He said the Iraqi people would establish a democratic government in the country.

Khatami said: “Iran calls for establishment of a democratic government in Iraq and solidarity of all political and ethnic groups of the country”.

Lauding the services of late Ayatullah Baqer Al-Hakim, the President said he was a devotee, well wisher and an enlightened man who always contemplated about the interest and dignity of Iraq.

Abdul Aziz also met with Iranian parliament speaker Mehdi Karrubi and discussed regional affairs.
