Europe: Clerics, thinkers urge Iraqis to adhere to Marja’iya on Najaf By: Nabil Raza LONDON, United Kingdom: Muslim clerics and a number of intellectuals from Islamic organizations and centers in the United Kingdom and Europe condemned the tragic events on the Iraqi arena, which have extended to the sanctity of the holy shrines in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. In a statement issued after their meeting held on Wednesday 14 April 2004 at Imam Ali Foundation in London, the clerics and intellectuals said: “We urge international and human rights bodies worldwide to stand by the plight of the Iraqi people, especially with what the holy city of Najaf may be facing. As events rapidly unfold, it is clear that US forces are determined to launch a potential attack.” “Everyone at this meeting hopes that this show of force is aimed at providing security and stability and not bloodshed and killing of innocent people.” The statement further said: “The importance of the holy Shrines emanate from their grand status in the hearts of Muslims from many beliefs, because they represent the leadership of the Muslim nation.” ”We therefore hold the occupying forces responsible for maintaining the security and sanctity of this city (Najaf) and its religious leaders – the Grand Marja’iya. Let self-control, wisdom and patience reign so as any attack on the holy city of Najaf may be prevented - for it will lead to more destruction and ruin and expose Iraq to great dangers, leading to lack of security and the prevalence of anarchy.” The clerics and thinkers called upon all the Iraqis to adhere to the directives and rational guidance of the Marja’iya especially in not giving way to those who permit themselves to expose this city to any harm.
