Centuries-old Husseini processions taken out in Amroha
By: Nizam Hussain
AMROHA, India: Like other global parts,
chain of Hussaini majalis and processions is in continuation in India
to mark the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) in the scorching
plain of Karbala at the hands of Yazid (L) some 1,400 years back.
In this connection, mourning programs that kicked off on the eve of
Muharram crescent would remain continue till 8th of Rabi-ul Awwal.
Centuries-old processions and majalis were held this year also in
different Indian cities including Amroha.
On ninth of Muharram, annual majlis-e-aza program consisted of marsiya,
mimber and tehtul lafz marsiya was held at Azakhana Syed Shams Ali
Khan Mohalla Darbar-e-Kalan followed by a grand procession which was
taken out with traditional magnificence.
There is reported a narration of love and devotion of a Hindu priest
Baba Ganga Nath (Bara Bazar) to Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) in the
history of Amroha in connection with this historical procession.
250 years back when Dost Ali went out from Darbar-e-Kalan to Katkoi
with Alam (standard) of Hazrat Abbas (AS) and reached in front of the
hut of Baba Ganga Nath, the Baba poured water on the feet of Dost Ali
and put his special sash on the Alam with great love, and this sash is
seen on every Alam even this day. Setting dead body on fire is must in
Hinduism, but despite being a Hindu, Baba was not set on fire after
his death.
The place which is called by Hindus Baba’s Samadh (tomb where the
Hindu saint’s ashes are buried) is Bab’s grave.
Despite sleet, sheeted rain, cold weather and icy winds, Husseini
mourners holding standards of Hazrat Abbas (AS) came out of Azakhana
Darbar-e-Kalan reciting ‘Aye Dost Ibne Saqi-e Kausar Hussain hain” and
creating an atmosphere of Karbala in Amroha.
Passing through Muaiyana passage, the procession ended at Azakhana
Dost Ali (late) at 9:00 PM. Throughout the route, all matmi
organizations of Amroha recited Nohay and performed chest beating.
Another procession of Alam (standards), Taboot (replica coffin) and
Zuljinah was brought out from Azakhana Faheem-un Nisa Mohalla
Danishmandan.
Zuljinah is a replica of the faithful horse of Hazrat Imam Hussain
(AS) named ‘Zuljinah’ who despite being an animal stood with Imam
Hussain (AS), and remained thirsty with Imam and his companions. Imam
Hussain (AS) went to the battlefield riding on Zuljinah and it was the
same horse which brought the news of martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain
(AS) to the chaste women of holy Prophet (SW)’s family with Imam (AS)’s
blood on its forehead.
Elegist remained with the procession throughout the route while
reciting Amroha’s traditional elegies “Shaheed-e Karbala Hussain
Hussain Hussain…” the procession culminated at Azakahana Wazeer-un
Nisa Danishmandan at 9:00 PM.
